High up in the Chilterns and alongside Beaconsfield sits the Grande Dame: the award-winning Old Queens Head.
The lanes may twist and turn and the M40 is somewhere nearby, but keep on going because your Queen awaits and she likes to entertain.
Step off the gravel into the country house interior of warm Zoffany fabrics and wooden furniture claimed from auctions and salerooms nearby. The welcome is warm and our happy crew are there to look after you. Inside, fine food and drink awaits and the choice is yours: To the right, the bar beckons, warmed by its looming fireplace and low beamed ceiling. To your left and up the stairs the chandeliered ceilings draws you towards the galleried dining room.
Outside the extensive gardens offer a drink on the sun-dappled terrace or an al-fresco lunch in the peace and quiet of an English village.
Back in the flagstoned bar and choose from the stagey main table in the bay window or perhaps the more refined seats of the main salon opening out onto the gardens. Choices, choices, but there again, the quiet anonymity of the snug, with its little woodburner, has its own appeal.
From the stairs the top of the house beckons. But first comes the coziness of the cockpit on the midstairs landing - a vaulted space nestled between above and below. On the gallery, the fine diners are enjoying the high life - looking downwards but never aloof.
There's no class divide with this particular monarch.
